Most SMEs have file based antivirus protection - the media has done a relatively good job of scaring most company directors into buying the cheapest available antivirus protection.
A fewer number of companies have email scanning either on the client or on the mailserver / gateway which stops spam and email borne viruses - we use GFI MailSecurity as the diversity of scanning engines provides the best possible protection.
We've not seen many SMEs with fewer than 100 users that implement web based scanning and filtering - this still remains the second largest source of viruses for most computers (email being the largest).
Many companies believe they're covered with the client antivirus, but do you really want your users to be prompted with a popup telling them they have a virus? The first thing they'll do is jump on the phone and ask you (if you're an IT admin of course) what to do.
Blocking viruses on the gateway should be implemented for exactly the same reasons as email blocking - it takes the threat and choice away from your users letting them get on with their job.
As with email we always choose a product diversity of scanning engines for maximum protection - this ensures there's no lag between when a virus appears in the wild and when it appears in your chosen products definition file.
